YouTube Removes US Capitol Riot Trial Video, Citing Election Misinformation
On Friday, YouTube withdrew a video posted by the congressional committee investigating last year's attack on the US Capitol because it contained false election information circulated by then-President Donald Trump.
"Our election integrity policy prohibits content that makes false claims that widespread fraud, error, or problems changed the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election unless it provides adequate context," YouTube spokeswoman Ivy Choi said in response to an AFP request.
"We are applying our policies equally to all and have removed the January 6th video uploaded by the Committee channel."
The committee, which is in the midst of a series of public hearings investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on US government headquarters to tilt the results of the presidential election in favor of Trump, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. .
YouTube did not specify which video on the channel was removed, but the media said the rejected clip included Trump making unsubstantiated statements questioning the integrity of the election.
Trump pressured his Vice President Mike Pence to agree to an illegal plot to cancel the 2020 US election and fomented a mob that put his vice president's life at risk when he refused, officials, congressional investigators, and former officials said Administrative Assistants on Thursday.
The committee investigating the attack detailed how the former President chastised Pence for not approving the plan, both knowing it was illegal - even after learning the violence erupted when the Congress convened to confirm Democrat Joe Biden's victory.
In its third public hearing on the insurgency, the panel described Trump's "relentless" campaign of pressure on Pence -- as the cornerstone of a criminal conspiracy to keep the defeated president in power.
The committee argues that Trump's pursuit of this plan led to violence on Capitol Hill that has been linked to at least five deaths. Referral Link
